What should I pay attention to when buying a pig food bowl?

When purchasing a pig feed bowl it is important to take into account several critical points:

  1. Type of pig feed: Consider the type of feed you are using: grain feed, crumb food, meal, flour not exceeding 35% CCM or frying. Each type of feed requires a specific feed tray.
  2. Pig life stage: Adjust the feed tray to the life stage of the animal. Kraambiggen, weaned piglets, meat pigs and sows have different needs.
  3. Group size: Determine the group size per pighouse. This affects the size, number of feeding places and the design of the food bowl.
  4. Built-in options: Check whether or not the feed bin can be incorporated into the partition, depending on the barn layout.

After answering these questions you can choose the right pig food container in us product overview. We always offer multiple alternatives that suit your unique stable situation. This allows you to make an objective choice, because there is not always one type of bowl that is best.

Should I get a pig food tray with or without a drink nipple?

This is a choice you may have to make in consultation with your veterinary or advisor. It is often a personal choice and it also has to do with the space you have in your pighouse. A drink nipple as close to the pig feed bowl as possible or in the feed bowl with a separate drinking area is our preferred option. In addition, we can in principle provide every pig feed bowl with a drinking nipple (except for dry feeding troughs) or the drinking nipple present. For the pigs and piglets drying troughs we supply we also have matching single or multiple drinking troughs from our own production. Especially the duo drinkers we offer in our program are very popular and are also very advantageous in price. The fact that pigs from 2 different lofts meet each other during drinking brings great benefits. Seeing food does eat, but seeing drinking also makes drinking.

Will you help me with the right choice of pork bowl?

I'd love to. We advise everyone to make use of this without obligation. For more than 50 years, we've been making the pigs feeding troughs for pig farming all by ourselves, so we think we know what we're talking about. We have more than 200 variations in pig feeding troughs so we can offer several alternative pig feeding troughs at each life stage of the animal or the type of feed. We therefore have no interest in selling one type of pig feed tray with one specific dosing mechanism because we have, so to speak, only one type of pig feed tray. We simply want you to make the right choice for your situation and to be so satisfied that you tell your fellow Members. And often the best solution is certainly not the most expensive food bowl. Call or mail us, or fill our referral in and we would like to advise you free of obligation about pig feeding troughs without any further obligations.

What's better is a round trough or a square trough under a bowl?

A square trough!

We have had round troughs in our programme and we have taken them out of our programme, because we were very dissatisfied with the results and comments we had. Unfortunately, we sometimes have to sell no if we want to have a round trough, but we want to support 100% of our product that we produce and sell, so that you are and will remain completely satisfied. Why are we not in favour of round troughs? Below our arguments:

  • A feed bowl for weaned piglets or meat pigs with round trough shall stand stand alone in a loft and cannot be incorporated into the partition. Due to the fact that pigs have to be around this feed box, which takes up a lot of space, this very much disturbs the function areas in the pig shed. This may have the disadvantage of fattening in undesirable places and littering and that pigs who want to rest cannot get rest. This is not ideal for animal welfare and long tails.
  • A bowl with round trough cannot be placed on the corridor. The animals cannot stand between the trough and the corridor if the bowl is too close to the corridor wall. Because of this there is no good view of the whole trough or which is eaten clean or that there is unnecessary water in it. In addition, you cannot adjust the feed tray from the corridor and you have to climb into the loft. This costs unnecessary working time.
  • A round trough runs to the middle taps. In front of the edge there is enough space but if the pig has to head to the middle there is often lack of space because the trough there is often too narrow. This makes the accessibility of feed not ideal and that can cause unrest. Feed and water must always be very easily accessible.
  • A square trough is much better equipped with anti-morsal edges on the front and on the sides. A round trough spills more.
  • In an odd number of lofts you cannot install the feed tray with round trough in the wall and it must be placed standalone.

What's the best position for a bowl?

A pig bowl is best placed in or against the intermediate wall at the aisle.

By placing the food tray on the corridor wall you create a quiet place for the pigs to eat. In addition, you have a good view of the trough and you can see at a glance whether the trough is clean of feed residue and water. This saves you a lot of working time and water and feed spills. In addition, you can easily reach the front of the aisle at the adjustment of the pig feed bowl and you can properly assess the contents of the feed bunker during your control round.

Can I trade in my old feed bins?

If you want to buy new PT1 pig feed bins, we can always put you in contact with several traders in used stables who want to buy your existing pigs vending machines. We have contact with several parties so that you can control yourself. Of course, you can also choose to sell your own food trays. The profit margin will therefore be higher. In addition to social media, there are several national and international websites on which you can offer used feed trays. Please feel free to inform us and we will make sure that you can get in touch with several lots of used barn equipment. For example, you separate the purchase of new feed troughs and the sale of used feed troughs making the final price transparent and usually much more favourable than you do in 1 deal. We are happy to assist you.

Can I order another color container?

Our standard colours are green with white. But we also have plates of blue with white or red with black or completely black. In these colors we can make your food trays. If this is a lot of food trays, we can also order pallets with plates in other colours, and in principle deliver any colour.

How do I mount a feed bin?

Good luck! If a bowl is loose, a pig does not eat well here and the bowl can wear off unnecessarily. Make sure that a single bowl with 2 mounting angles is mounted to the floor and that it is also mounted to the rear wall. We recommend 4 mounting corners and 2 stainless steel u-profiles in which you attach the wall. We can provide you with the right stainless steel mounting corners and possibly also the stainless steel u-profiles if they are not standard at the feed box.

Can I get a lid because of dust restriction on the feeding troughs?

Yes, we can optionally make and deliver a lid for almost any type of food tray.

Is a feed bin an important investment?

Yes, we find a good feed bowl with anti-mors edges (many feed boxes don't have this, be careful!) for your pigsty the main investment. A handful of feed spills can provide an annual truck full of feed in the manure well. 50 grams per day of feed is per pig meat 17 kilos at 340 days of occupation. At two thousand places, that's 34,000 kilos of food in the well. This will cost you twice: for the purchase of the feed and for the extra manure drainage.

Vakblad hogs has a very nice Dutch language here article written together with Sander Palmans of the Agricultural Test and Training Centre.

We therefore advise you to make a good choice of feeding tray with anti spill edges. You will be able to adjust what a bowl per delivered pig costs at the bottom of the line.

If you have any doubts, call or email us and we would like to provide you with a test feed tray.

How do I adjust a feed tray?

Don't be rude. In practice, we see far too often that feeding troughs are far too coarsely tuned to make feed old and dirty and spilled. Unlike long troughs, animals can eat on our feeding troughs 24/7. So they have all day to eat their necessary portion and because of this the pigs are also quiet. Let the animals be busy eating, as they should in nature. This is much better for the pig but also for the feed conversion and your wallet. Don't make bins empty. Pigs are creatures of habit and they want to be able to eat at any time. If the feeding troughs are empty and the pigs get hungry then the habit is disturbed. A pig is then stressed and can become aggressive to other pigs or to materials in the loft.

What does the number of animals in the tables in the product overview mean?

This is the number of animals we know is the best result. So it's not a must or a legal requirement. In some feeding troughs more animals can be placed per feeding compartment, but we know that this does not benefit the effectiveness of the feeding tray. We advise to keep the numbers in our tables should this be permitted by law in your country or region, including in other brands of food containers.

Do I get a warranty on PT0 products?

Yes, we give a unique warranty period on our products. On feed containers for piglets and pigs we give 7 years warranty on material and production defects. On feed boxes for sows we give 3 years warranty on material and production errors. On piglets' hoods and drinking nipples we give 1 year on material and production errors. In the case of drinking nipples, if the water is acidified, the guarantee of drinking nipples will then lapse. Drinking nipples are intended for water.

Shipping or driving costs are outside the warranty and must always be paid separately.

We deliver according to the metal union conditions we are affiliated to. The metal union conditions can be found in the footer of our website.

Can I get customized?

Yeah, we can do customization. We have made our pig feeding troughs so that they fit best in most situations. But if you want to have the feed box higher, lower or wider, or you want wider eating boxes, stainless steel slider, a spindle adjustment, etc. then we can also make that for you. No problem. We can actually make everything in our own factory, that is the advantage that we produce everything in the Netherlands and the lines are so short.

Can I test or test PT0 products?

Sure. We are convinced of our product quality and therefore we advise anyone who doubts to buy a test tray. You just pay for one test tray and test the bin. If you don't like the bowl, then you can clean it and send it back to us undamaged and then we credit the full purchase amount. In practice, however, we almost always see that they want to keep the feed tank.

Do you have an external mechanic?

We do not have an external mechanic ourselves, but we do work with parties we hire for external work. We can take care of you in this.

Do you have a 24/7 help desk?

No, we are open from 7.30 to 16.30 on working days.

For variomix we have placed various documents under the heading downloads on our site, which allows you to solve problems yourself. Manuals are also mentioned. In case of variomix failures, it is best to call an electrical installation agency. They can easily measure the system. We can then send spare parts to you afterwards so you can replace them.

Is PT0 sold all over the world?

PT0 is sold worldwide. We can deliver our feed boxes both assembled and unassembled, so that you can save on transport costs at larger lots. We can arrange the transport for you but you can also arrange the transport yourself. If you are looking for a dealer, please let us know, we can help you.

Can I also buy directly from PT0 ?

We do have regular direct contact with end users for advice on types of feed containers and technical questions about them, but the final sale takes place through our dealers. We've been working with most of our dealers for decades and they know our products through and through. They also know what needs to be taken into account and are usually located close to you, which makes it easy to schedule a visit. If you are looking for a dealer please let us know, we can help you.

When was PT0 opened?

We are open on working days from 7.30 to 16.30. We are closed between 12.00 and 12.30. Suppliers and transporters can contact us until 16.00.

What does PT0 do to the environment?

Quite a lot we find ourselves. We have been processing at least 600,000 kilos of recycled plastic plates in our feed bins since the late 1970s. These PE plates are made from, for example, PE caps of soft drinks; thus from consumer waste. In doing so, we are contributing to the disposal and recycling of society's plastic waste heap.

We also process a lot of stainless steel. Stainless steel is again largely made from collected and recycled stainless steel.

Moreover, we only have Dutch suppliers and 2 German suppliers. This ensures that transport distances to our company are as small as possible.

We haven't used gas to warm our property since our new construction in 2019. Everything is heated up with electricity and we circulate filtered air from machines through our halls.

We only have LED lights in our company.

The machines we buy are all selected on low energy consumption.

Finally, we have over 1100 solar panels lying on our company building. These panels generate more energy on an annual basis than we consume ourselves.

Does PT0 make more than just pig feed boxes?

Yes we also make complete stainless steel troughs, stainless steel U-profiles, floor heating plates, piglets' nests, piglets' hoods, straw grapes, straw troughs and stainless steel drinking troughs.

In addition to pig farming, we also make forage containers for calves.

We are also active outside the agricultural sector. We do a lot of punching, machining and welding for other companies and, in addition to semi-finished products, we also manufacture plastic tanks and containers for contractors or infra companies. For example, we can also weld plastic products whose end products are used in many other sectors.
