Why choose an SW curly-tailed pig feeder?
In view of future welfare requirements, such as the BLK 1-star standard from 2030, and in order to ban on docking pig tails As of 2030 in the Netherlands, we are receiving many enquiries about pen widths. When it comes to rearing pigs with long tails, various studies show that sources that, alongside factors such as genetics, feed and climate, the accessibility of feeding and drinking areas in particular plays a very significant role. By ensuring that the likelihood of a pig experiencing hunger or thirst is kept to a minimum, you remove a major trigger for biting behaviour.
How do you ensure that the pig feels as little hunger as possible?
The number and width of the feeding bays in a pig trough are very important in this respect. Pigs want to be able to eat in peace without other pigs disturbing them or getting in their way. Verba dry food bowls For piglets, the standard feeding width is 20 cm, and for feed troughs for fattening pigs, the standard feeding width is 30 cm. That is generous, but there are also queries from the market suggesting that the width of a feeding space should be the shoulder width of a pig plus an extra 10 per cent. For a piglet, this is 18 to 19 centimetres, for which the standard VERBA SL dry feed troughs are more than adequate. For fattening pigs, however, this theory would result in a feeding width of 35 cm. The Beter Leven 1-star quality mark also states in its draft requirements that this internal dimension of 35 cm must be maintained from 2030 onwards. To this end, we had to develop a modified model of the dry feed troughs for farms wishing to implement this.
What kind of feed trough for fattening pigs have we developed?
The tray we have developed, with 35cm-wide feeding compartments, is the SW feeding trough. Its nickname is ‘the curly-tailed feeder’. The feeding openings on this SW curly-tailed feeder are always wider than 35 centimetres, measured between the side panels.
We have these curly-tailed dry food bowls in 8 different designs:
SW1100KR (1×1 compartment): external width of 380 mm, SW2100KR (1×2 compartments): external width of 740 mm, SW3100KR (1×3 compartments): external width of 1095mm, SW4100KR (1×4 compartments): external width of 1455mm. The four double-sided variants are all the same width and are also 1,000 mm high.
Options for the SW curly-tailed bird feeder
As with all VERBA pig dry feed troughs, the SW feed troughs are supplied in the standard version. This is the result of over 50 years of in-house production and experience, underpinned by our comprehensive 7-year warranty on pig feed troughs. Over the last 10 years, the dry feed troughs have remained unchanged in every detail. We believe that, in general, dry feed troughs are best designed in this way, without going overboard with excessively thick materials, which would make the price unnecessarily high. Of course, many people have their own preferences regarding the design they want. We can almost always accommodate these; please do not hesitate to ask!
Some of the options we offer for all our dry feed troughs for pigs – and therefore also for this SW curly-tailed pig feed trough – are: Spindle adjustment instead of standard slide adjustment, stainless steel slide plate instead of plastic slide plate, bolts and nuts instead of pop rivets, lids, mounting brackets and U-profiles for installation. Stainless steel spindles, stainless steel slides and bolts with nuts instead of pop rivets have disadvantages compared to our standard versions. We would be happy to explain these to you so that you can choose the right feeder.
